I always have "stack addition views on top of the last active table view" checked on so I don't have a bunch of floating around. It is so easy to click back and forth between content and field view or if needed, I can float the field view.  In any event the table needs to be opened first before you can see the field view, so it may boil down to preference versus 'bug' ...
