You should be using projected data and not data in decimal degrees, project it to a suitable projection (eg UTM), then do the analysis, then determine the area

Actually it is quite possible to have a flow directions that don't conform to the cardinal directions without them being sinks, but running a fill would be an obvious prelude to a flow direction and a flow accumulation.
