My bad. I parsed the coords minx maxx\n miny maxy. Coordinate references are fundamental properties, determined at layer creation; you'd need to reload to change the precision. - V

There are many ways to obtain the actual envelope, including zooming to the window and writing down the LLx/y and URx/y, and using 'sdelayer -o alter -E calc'. Is your dataset really 10:1 in width:height? (2000km x 200km) Your vertex count is relatively small, but you might see performance savings by using an xyscale of 1000 (millimeter precision) or 100 (centimeter precision) vice the 0.1mm default. The minimum area indicates a *parcel* of 0.005 square meters (roughly 3"x3") -- that seems questionable (not many lots sold with the fooprint of a fencepost -- how would you keep out trespassers? 😉 - V

Old questions, revisited: > What geometry storage option are you using? SDEBINARY or GEOMETRY/GEOGRAPHY? > What is the envelope which is defined for the layer? What is the actual envelope > of features in the dataset? I'm looking the actual layer envelope and MBR of *all* features. The purpose here is to determine if a "draw all features" is doing a spatial query (it shouldn't, but an incorrect layer envelope could throw off the ArcSDE optimizer). New questions: Since your table is versioned, how often do you reconcile and post features to the base table? What is the total row count in your A and D tables? What is the average number of vertices per feature ('sdelayer -o stats' output)? How is your coordinate reference defined ('sdelayer -o describe_long' output)? - V

What tool(s) are you using to make the changes? Is the table versioned? What geometry storage option are you using? How many rows are involved (total, deleted, & inserted)? What is the envelope which is defined for the layer? What is the actual envelope of features in the dataset? "Draw entire dataset" should be pure database operation, which is dependent solely on the size of the database cache and the number of rows to return. - V

If the Esri website says it's supported, then it's supported (and known to work). Other thoughts: Even though Oracle has discontinued 10g support, their website doesn't indicate that XE support has stopped (though it's understandably not the same that a paying client would get for 11g). There are other free databases available that operate with ArcSDE. I'm not a fan of using operating systems which are significantly newer than the application software. The software stack is generally more stable when the ArcSDE is newer than the database is newer than the OS. - V

No, you cannot use Oracle's spatial index syntax in SQL-Server. A google on "create index geometry microsoft" generated this link. Note that tables with GEOMETRY/GEOGRAPHY columns are not ArcSDE layers until they're registered with 'sdelayer -o register'. You could also use the Query Layers capability of ArcGIS 10, but that won't make the data available through ArcSDE connections. - V

The current setting of the CONNECTIONS parameter is returned by: sdeconfig -o list -P CONNECTIONS -u ... The current number of active connections is determined by: sdemon -o info -I USERS -s server -i port (if the service is running) or by doing a "SELECT count(*) from sde_process_information" ("process_information" on Oracle). - V

The issue I ran into is described in Metalink note 1268383.1. We're still working toward a solution but I've found several interesting features: 1) It seems to be intermittent 2) I couldn't reproduce the issue in an instance where Oracle Spatial was not installed (Esri only uses the Locator capabilities available in Intermedia) 3) We were able to use a view on the original table with an optimizer hint to get spatial- first queries that didn't result in full table scans. In light of the above, the option to disassociate statistics with spatial queries seems quite drastic indeed. - V

Which Oracle release are you using? (10.2.0.?) What geometry storage are you using? I was recently introduced to an optimizer issue that affects SDO_GEOMETRY in Oracle 10.2.0.5-11.2.0.2. There are drastic and less drastic solutions avaliable. - V

I just used 9.3.1sp2 and 10.0sp1 to create empty file geodatabases, and the directory contents are very different (10.0 has nearly double the number of files, most of them with a ".atx" suffix). What does a 'dir/t' of the *.gdb directory show? Even if the layout is nominally 9.3, it's still very possible that FTP transfer could have corrupted the binary files with ASCII translation or a transient transmission error. - V

Views across DATABASE LINKs are possbile, but usually perform poorly if not carefully tuned. You cannot use the ArcSDE API to create a database link view, but you can create a dummy table with the same columns (and same types), create_view to that, then edit the view in SQL Developer, etc... so that it crosses databases. - V
