Support for File Geodatabase + Network Dataset After ArcGIS Engine Deprecation”

We recently received communication regarding the deprecation of ArcGIS Engine Runtime and the retirement of transportation networks embedded in Mobile Map Packages (MMPKs) by March 1, 2026.

In our current mobile workflow, we are not using MMPKs with networks. Instead, our client provides a standalone file geodatabase (.geodatabase) along with a .tn folder (transportation network dataset). Our iOS application consumes this dataset directly using the ArcGIS Maps SDK for Swift via RouteTask(pathToDatabaseURL:networkName:).

We have a few questions regarding this workflow,

  1. Is the file geodatabase + network dataset (.geodatabase + .tn) workflow fully supported beyond March 2026?

  2. Will there be any impact on generating these datasets from ArcGIS Pro for use in mobile apps after the ArcGIS Engine Runtime retirement?

  3. Are there any recommended alternatives for offline routing (beyond the geodatabase + .tn approach) that we should consider?

Thank you for your guidance.

Hi,

We have been, and will continue to, send out communication regarding the deprecation and upcoming retirement of the ArcGIS Engine Software Developer Kit (SDK) and the ArcGIS Engine Runtime on March 1, 2026. But, based on your question about how it impacts your project, I don't think you should be impacted at all.

The deprecation of ArcGIS Engine SDK and ArcGIS Engine Runtime does NOT affect:

  • ArcGIS Maps SDK for Swift
  • Mobile Geodatabase format (.geodatabase files)
  • Mobile Geodatabase transportation networks (.tn folder alongside .geodatabase file)
  • Transportation networks in Mobile Map Packages
  • ArcGIS Pro workflows

I'd love to see the Commnication you've received, perhaps you could send to / share with ArcGISEngineDeprecation@esri.com ?

Thanks

Mike

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your reply.

I’m sharing the email we received from our client who is using ArcGIS. They provide us a mmpk and network dataset (.geodatabase + .tn) separately. We use that in our iOS app for Offline routing. I understand that there is no change from mobile side, but Do our clients need to modify their approach in how they generate the MMPK and network dataset files

This is the mail received from our client:

Hi,

We will proceed with including the existing runtime file in the new zipping script for now. However, please note that the network runtime has been deprecated by ESRI and is set to expire in March. As it is no longer compatible with our current GIS software, we’ll need to identify a suitable replacement for this component of the data delivery in the near future.

To move forward, we’ll need some guidance on selecting a compatible file format.

Also they attached the Mail which they received from ESRI:

Description

ArcGIS Engine (ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit and ArcGIS Engine Runtime) entered Mature Support on March 1, 2024. No further functionality-based software updates, patches, and hot fixes will be available. Quotes for additional ArcGIS Engine licenses ceased on July 1, 2024.

ArcGIS Engine has been deprecated as Esri focuses on client-application developer products that meet the needs of developers now, and in future, as part of the modern ArcGIS system. The deprecation of ArcGIS Engine also enables Esri to provide customers with the best experience with our fully supported client-application developer products, while also allowing us to deliver enhanced features and comprehensive support.

The client-application developer products Esri encourages customers to move to include: ArcGIS Maps SDKs for Native Apps, ArcGIS Maps SDKs for Game Engines, ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript, and ArcGIS Pro SDK for .NET.

The deprecation of ArcGIS Engine will not immediately affect end-users’ work. ArcGIS Engine end-users with perpetual licenses will be able to continue using ArcGIS Engine applications. End-users with term licenses can continue to pay for term licenses through December 1, 2025, and ArcGIS Engine based applications running on term licenses will continue to run for one year after the final term renewal.

Recommendation

Esri recommends customers migrate to alternative, fully supported Esri developer technology before ArcGIS Engine is retired on March 1, 2026.

Thanks,

Dwayne Carpenter
