How can I determine the spatial resolution of a map - is this derived from the scale of the mxd, as this is not set so is there a way of doing this?
Any help appreciated.

Old school was .5 mm on a printed map was the smallest practical feature you could draw. That gives you 25 m resolution on a 1:50,000 map

I think that your question needs more context though.

The resolution is not dependent upon the scale of the map. Resolution is defined as the minimum distance between two objects on a map, so that the objects can be distinguished for view. It refers to the pixel size of the map in question.
