It would be awesome if the Oriented Imagery Dataset could measure objects in images using lidar. OIC Classic's Area tool can measure object in oriented images, but it's not very accurate because it only uses a DEM, so object that's not on the ground, like roofs, billboards, and windows, won't be measured right. If it could use point clouds, it would be way more accurate for those kinds of things.

I was able to get some good results generating a DSM to essentially do the same thing as you've suggested. It obviously didn't work with overhangs but OIC Classic did have the option to utilise depth images which should allow this to work.
