Digitising multiple polygons with a defined survey area

I want to know hot to digitise polygons within a 'defined survey area' by using the 'cut' tool, or instructions on how to digitise multiple polygons within the defined survey area and label the attribute table. I'm currently getting the following error message (see attached picture) when using the cut tool to try and digitise. I was told it was good practice to start digitising from the edge of the survey area inwards, however, after drawing a few polygons I start getting the error message.  What is the correct way and told to use to digitise multiple polygons within the survey which have different attributes (i.e. vegetation code and conditions for example).

You are not completing the cut of the selected polygon.  You need to start and end outside the polygon, you cannot complete the cut somewhere in the middle of the polygon.

Thanks for getting back to me so promptly, I’ll try what you suggest and see how I go. Can I ask you one more question, I’m very new to this and trying to learn how to digitise ASAP. What do I do in a situation when I have a vegetation community that I need to digitise say in the middle of the survey area which doesn’t touch the edges of the survey area, and for example might be a creekline which requires me to digitise both sides of it before I can label it in the attribute table; however the edges do not touch the edges of the survey area, how would I go about digitising these lines? Would I still use the cut tool or something else?

Your help is much appreciated.

If overlay is not an issue just create a new line feature class for the creekline and digitize it.   Here are some tutorials you might find helpful.
