Hello, This is Terry Bonbrake, a retired Professional Hydrologist. I previously worked for civil engineering firms doing drainage design, running Hec-Ras models and submitting FEMA applications, etc. Now I'm on my own and would like to become more involved in environmental work; watershed management, nonpoint source pollution control and wetlands preservation/restoration.
My GIS success this year has been leasing a copy of ArcGISPro for Personal Use and starting a self-training program. As of now I am using the text book GIS Tutorial 1 for ArcGIS Pro as a training guide. I think its a very well written book, with a lot of detail, but occasionally I become lost as to the next action required to obtain the desired results. I'm not sure GeoNet is the correct site for me but I am looking for a resource where I can occasionally obtain advice, on these issues, with someone more experienced.
I have no previous experience with GIS but have been working pretty regularly the past few months in my tutorial book. This summer or fall I'm hoping to start an online GIS Masters program and even though the university indicated no previous GIS experience is required, I would like to become familiar with GIS before I start the program.
I live in the Mid-West, where there are a lot of nonpoint source pollutants, from agricultural fields and large industrial parks, contaminating our water. I feel have a working knowledge of GIS would be a real benefit in providing assistance to land owners and small agencies.
