Slow map export in 300 dpi JPEG/PDF

Hello,

I am having trouble exporting my maps to JPG and PDF and I don't know why. It takes about 5 minutes every time. I am clipping the data frame instead of the layers themselves. I use a raster as a base map and put vectors on top of it. I am using ArcGIS 10.4 and I am working on a network.

Hi Patrice,

How large is the exported image after the export? Are there labels turned on in your map? Do you have the same slowness if you were to use other file formats (or reducing the DPI)?

One of the maps I exported is a JPEG 5100x3300 pixel, 2 MB. I does use labels (Maplex engine), I get the same slowness using PDF (didn't try anything else than JPEG or PDF, since it is the company standard). 300 dpi is also a company standard

Are there a ton of labels? If so, then this may be a 'normal' speed for it. Each label is drawn in and represented as text (especially on the PDF). If you were to turn the labels off just to test, would it still be ~5 minutes?

What kind of basemap are you using? 2MB seems kind of small for a 5100x3300 map using a raster basemap.

5 minutes would be fast for me.  I am exporting jpeg's @ 600 dpi and each one takes around 10 minutes.  I am using full vector basemap (the one that comes with BA) along with various vector feature classes.

This is on a fairly cutting edge desktop running 16gb ram, intel xeon 3.5ghz 8 core processor, NVME SSD 200gb

So unfortunately, I dont think you are going to be getting any faster than what you have.

Well, after reading all of you, maybe it is actually a normal speed. The maps taking 5+ minutes to export do have a lot more labels than the maps taking 15 seconds.

Thank you.
