Pie chart spacing

I'm having some trouble with my pie charts. I have a point shapefile of stations around the UK and I want to show the parameters recorded by these stations on pie charts. For this purpose I need the pie charts to not overlap but to be as close to the station location as possible. I have done this sucessfully before, but I cannot repeat it. I have ticked "prevent chart overlap" but this places the charts very spread out so they are not close to the station location and so the map becomes rather meaningless. Does anyone know what is causing this? I can't find anything that controls pie chart spacing in properties, or any of the other menus. I know it must be possible because I have done it before, on the same version of ArcMap (10.0).
I have attached a map that I made previously which is how I want it, and a screen shot of how it looks now with the charts spread out.

Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks,

Kate.
