One possible choice for MAP is MAP.convertArcObjectToPythonObject in the Python Window.

I didn't find any explanations for this function in the Desktop Help, the Resource Center or the internet.

What is it for and which parameters does ist take?

It's a private internal function used as an arcgisscripting/arcpy bridge.

It is not recommended you use it.

But we can still use it, even though there is not a recommendation.  Is it supported?
