Map automation based on visible layers?

I would really appreciate any input or script that would allow me to make a dyamic textbox that will output the name of a a visible layer.

I'm making hundreds of figures based on the layer that is turned on, so if anyone knows how to make the figure # change in a seperate textbox according the the map that is being made (ie. 1a, 1b, 1c, 2a, 2c, etc.)

If you use Data Driven Pages, then you can have a field in your index layer that has the figure # in it matching each extent.  Then you insert a dynamic text box that uses that attribute field to fill in the text.  See http://support.esri.com/fr/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/40291
