Hi All,
Does anyone have any good resources, tips, or tricks for designing better maps? Also, I am looking for a good set of road/highway marker shields.
Thanks,
For starters, how about Dr. Brewer's Esri Press books, Designed Maps and Designing Better Maps?
Good book. A little dated though.Thank you, David!
My go-to bible for cartographic principles and thematic representation is a book called:
Thematic Cartography and Geovisualization (3rd ed)
by Slocum, McMaster, Kessler and Howard
ISBN 978-0-13-229834-6
http://books.google.ca/books/about/Thematic_Cartography_and_Geovisualizatio.html?id=P_URAQAAIAAJ
I think every "mapper" should have a copy of this, I reference it a lot.
Cheers,
Todd
Thanks, Todd. I think I'll buy this book!
Practice, practice, practice!
Also have a look at the David Medeiros' presentation on Cartography in GIS (link below).
Thanks, Kyle! Practice is key!

I have found that Aileen Buckley's article in ArcUser (2012) is a great starting point. I refer undergrads to this source frequently. http://www.esri.com/news/arcuser/0112/files/design-principles.pdf
Hope it helps,
Paul
