Converting complicated VBScript labels to Maplex in ArcGIS 10.1

I have some fairly complicated labels in VBScript in ArcMap with different formatting specifications depending on the data.

I'd like to use Maplex to reduce the time it takes to move all the labels around so they don't overlap, but when I tick "Use Maplex Label Engine", the format of about half of the labels is lost - by which I mean the formatting code is displayed in the label instead of being applied to the label text.

Should Maplex be able to read the VBScript? Is there any place I can find tips on modifying the VB Script so that it is compatible with Maplex?

Sorry if this is a duplicate question, I looked through the forum but couldn't find any similar questions.

Apparently there are a couple of bugs in Maplex for 10.1, which should have been fixed with SP 1. See this thread.
