I am collecting maps from school atlases and geography textbooks from all South American countries from 1875 onwards. I have about 45-60 maps for each country. To turn this into usable data -- to analyze whether countries dispute areas where both are claiming territory as their homeland, but not other territory -- I must geo-reference and trace these maps. Geo-referencing is tricky and cumbersome but is proceeding.
The real issue is the time it takes to trace each map. With a mouse, it takes me about 3 hours to have a good trace of the borders of each map. (ArcScan won't make this any easier, for a variety of reasons.) I am now considering a Wacom Pen Display. Has anyone used such a Pen display to trace?
