What bands does the ArcGIS Pro image classification use?

Hey all,

 

First time poster and wasn't exactly sure where to take this question. So I went through and used the image classification wizard for support vector machine and random forest. Pixel based for both and applied the same training dataset. I was classifying healthy versus diseased pixels on trees. I had a layer that was a raster stack of 11 bands and had RGB showing for visual purposes. When going through the classification wizard it never asks which bands I would like to use for random forest or support vector machine. I went through the classification process twice using RGB and then NDVI, GNDVI and far-red but got the same results despite changing which bands I selected for RGB of the layer. Does anyone know which bands it is using for the classification in the for random forest and support vector?

 

 Also, under "image classification" I used the "accuracy assessment" to validate my SVM and RF layers. My training dataset was just under 10,000 pixels. I used 3,000 pixels for the accuracy assessment and got 100% accuracy for both my random forest and support vector layer. This was concerning to me so I bumped it up to 10,000 pixels and still got 100% accuracy. This means that all my training data was correctly classified in the RF and SVM layers. Does ArcGIS pro actually classify those training dataset pixels or does it just classify them as the user classified them in the training dataset. I have a hard time believing I created that strong of a training dataset there is 100% accuracy in both my random forest and support vector classification.

Hi Taylor,

If you used the classification wizard, all the bands in your input image were use in the classification. The bands displayed in the map are just for visualization, which can help you in selecting your training samples.

Accuracy assessment - you cannot use any of your training samples as your reference samples for accuracy assessment.  Ideally, these reference samples would be identified in a ground survey.  If this is not possible, use the highest resolution imagery possible - preferably not the same imagery as the image you want to classify - to delineate your reference samples. The samples for the accuracy assessment need to be a separate layer, and would be input as the Reference Layer when defining the inputs at the beginning of the wizard.

Hi Jeff (and Taylor, if you got any further with this),

I have a related query: My input raster is an 8 band stack, but when I look at the attribute tables of my training samples, they are only picking up 3 bands, ie there are only 3 columns of values (labelled, I guess by default, as RGB). This occurs when using both the Training samples Manager and the Image Classification Wizard. It seems to me that if the training samples are only making use of three bands, then the Classifier can only be for 3 bands also. I really need to use all 8 bands, so keen to hear if other people have found this, and if they've found a solution.

What is your desired usage?  It's unlikely that the product you are seeking would actually require a composite of all 8 of your bands, but the Composite Bands tool might be your best bet.  You may have better luck looking up RGB band combinations for whichever imaging platform your data comes from to find a True Color Composite or False Color Composite ratio which best fits your needs. Landsat and Sentinel each have pretty good and easy to find websites with band information.
