GIS Research Technician

The Environmental Sciences Group (ESG) is looking for a GIS research technician to work collaboratively within our GIS and technical project teams to support projects requiring spatial and data management tasks. The role requires that you both proactively and reactively support the team members, project managers and sponsors and be able to advance multiple projects with evolving priorities.

ESG is part of the Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Department located at the Royal Military College of Canada. ESG is a unique cost-recovery, research group focused on developing practical solutions to environmental problems through a combination of mission-oriented projects and cutting-edge research in the area of environmental science.

ESG provides specialized scientific expertise in the fields of environmental site assessment, monitoring and remediation, with particular expertise in remote settings, emerging contaminants, arsenic speciation and transformation, bioaccessibility, risk assessment, microbial community analysis, guidance development, use of wetlands for water pollution control, and scientific outreach activities, particularly involving indigenous peoples.

ESG offers flexible working hours, through an at home or in office approach, and the opportunity to participate in field work for a wide array of technical and research based projects. ESG is committed to the development and application of environmental research to create sustainable solutions for the management and cartography of environmental data and are seeking individuals with a keen interest in the environmental field to join our dynamic and collaborative group.

 

Title: GIS Reserach Technician

Full-time 37.5 h/week (Term Position until March 31, 2025, with option to renew)

Employment for this position is provided by Calian through a publicly awarded contract to the Royal Military College of Canada.

Key Responsibilities: As a GIS Research Technician you will be responsible for:

  • Assisting with technical reports by providing data production, mapping, and analysis support.
  • Developing high-quality maps and other cartographic products.
  • Performing data extraction, querying, editing, digitizing, scanning and conversion tasks.
  • Operating RTK or differential GPS and conventional Total Station equipment (training available).
  • Providing close support in projects involving either data management or tool development operations.
  • Following set procedures to ensure quality of results with adherence to ESG standards, processes and best practices.

 

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and skills:

Required:

  • Completed a university degree related to GIS, Geography or Geomatics; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Approximately 2-3 years of related work experience.
  • Demonstrable ArcGIS skills around data creation, manipulation, and entry.
  • Must possess the ability to create high-quality maps independently.
  • Familiarity and experience with relational databases in geodatabase format is important.
  • Ability to perform work accurately in a detail-oriented environment.

Key Skills:

  • Excellent knowledge of GIS Platforms and ESRI software suite including ArcGIS Pro
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and perform multiple work assignments simultaneously; competent in managing overlapping deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; proficiency in other Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently problem solve, tackle new assignments and multi-task in a detail-oriented environment.
  • Work in diverse team environments. Ability to occasionally travel to support field projects.
  • Possession of or eligible to obtain required Security Clearance.

Assets:

  • Experience with AutoCAD, QGIS, and/or Surfer.
  • Ability to Identify, gather, analyze, and integrate spatial data/imagery from internal or external sources (e.g., USGS, Google Earth Engine, etc.) to support image processing tasks, archiving and distribution of remotely sensed data
  • Proficiency in operating RTK or Differential GPS and conventional total station equipment.
  • Experience creating scripts in SQL or Python to translate data between various formats, create reports, and graph data.
