Our school turns GIS Day into a full-scale GIS Week — a celebration of how geography, data, and creativity can come together to tell powerful stories about our planet.
Throughout the week, students will dive into the world of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) learning how to create beautiful, meaningful maps using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online. We’ll explore how maps can be both scientific tools and works of art.
Highlights of GIS Week
GIS Art Maps – Students design their own art-style maps inspired by Earth’s natural beauty, using colour, pattern, and data to express environmental themes.
Learn ArcGIS Pro – Workshops introduce students to professional mapping tools where they can layer data, create 3D scenes, build models, run simulations and reveal hidden spatial patterns.
Eco Action Challenge – A hands-on geography project where students pick up rubbish, map the clean-up area, and analyse results using GIS.
Earth-Inspired Christmas Decorations – Celebrate creation with ornaments that showcase continents, landforms, and global colour palettes.
Map-Making Prizes – Creative, accurate, and inspiring maps will be showcased in a school exhibition and awarded prizes.
GIS Week is all about seeing the world differently — through data, design, and stewardship.
From climate change to local landscapes, students are learning that every map tells a story and that story begins with caring for the Earth.
This sounds like an awesome event and I love that you're dedicating a full week to celebrating GIS Day. Please do share any pictures and videos once you wrap up the week 🙂 I'm sure you're aware but the GIS Day website has a ton of additional activities you can share with your students as well.
