Adding Global ID Limitations

Can someone please point me to the documentation for situations where a global id cannot be added to an individual table or feature class?

I am trying to add it to a feature in a dataset that is:

• not versioned
• not in a network
• does have a number of relationships
• is in sde

I am getting the 000528 error with python. If I try with ArcCatalog the option is not available. However, it is available at the dataset level.

I think that you have to add it at the feature dataset level and cannot drill down to a specific FC within the feature dataset.
