Introduction
As geospatial technology continues to evolve, students and young professionals are seeking ways to gain hands-on experience in this field. One such opportunity is the Esri Assistantship Program, which provides students with invaluable exposure to GIS applications, research, and professional networking. This program is an excellent stepping stone for those looking to build a career in traditional geospatial sciences, Adv GEOAI , and Advanced Geo Analytics.
What is the Esri Assistantship Program?
The Esri Assistantship Program is designed to support students in gaining real-world GIS experience through collaboration with Esri experts and industry professionals. It offers participants the chance to work on innovative projects, access Esri software, and contribute to meaningful research in geospatial technology. The program serves as a bridge between academic learning and practical application, helping students develop critical skills that are highly valued in the industry.
Benefits for Students
Why does this program matter from my view:
As an AI graduate student passionate about geospatial technology, I see immense value in opportunities like the Esri Assistantship Program. The intersection of AI and GIS emerged, a new field called GEOAI, which is growing rapidly, and programs like this help students develop the expertise needed to innovate in fields such as urban planning, environmental sustainability, and spatial data science.
How to Get Involved
If you are a student interested in GIS and geospatial technology, here’s how you can take advantage of this program:
Conclusion
The Esri Assistantship Program is an incredible opportunity for students to gain practical GIS experience, expand their professional network, and prepare for a successful career in the geospatial industry. If you're passionate about GIS and want to learn from industry leaders, this program is worth exploring.

Thank you for sharing this, Manasa! I recently had the chance to participate in the Esri Student Assistantship Program at FedGIS 2025, and it was truly a game-changing experience. I was able to learn so much, connect with amazing professionals and students, and gain real exposure to the GIS industry.
I really appreciate how the program blends technical experience with networking and mentorship it made me feel more confident in my career path and opened my eyes to all the possibilities within GIS, especially as it intersects with AI and emerging tech like GEOAI.
This post does a great job of highlighting the value of the program. I definitely recommend it to other students looking to grow in this field.

As someone who transitiioned from an Esri internship to a full-time role, I can personally attest to how valuable programs like the Esri Assistantship are for aspiring GIS professionals. The hands-on experience, exposure to real- world applications, and opportunities to connect with industry experts trylu set a solid foundation for anyone entering the geospatial field. It's especially exciting to see how GEOAI and advanced spatial analytics are becoming more integrated into the conversation- there's so much potential for innovation at that intersection. I highly recommend students take advantage of programs like this- it's not just about gaining skills, but also about discovering where your passion can take you in this ever-evolving field.
As an Esri Student Assistant at the UC San Diego this year, I can attribute that the "Benefits for Students" section of this post is absolutely true! Working half-day shifts allowed me to attend hands on GIS trainings in Imagery and Remote Sensing and Deep Learning in ArcGIS Online. Networking opportunities were endless from assisting attendee registration to bouncing from one GIS social to the next; I even had to restock my business cards mid-week. At the GIS for Good social, I connected with two environmental nonprofits who I now assist in several projects. Moving forward, I want to stay connected with my Esri network and utilize the latest Esri technologies in my graduate research.
