What?! You didn’t think I’d leave you hanging after Part 1 of my blog series, right? If this is your first time here, my name is Michael, and I am a Social Media Specialist at Esri. I am thrilled to be sharing insights on some of the best practices to build and nurture your geospatial career by leveraging social media as a tool. If you haven’t read Part 1: Supercharge Your Geospatial Career with Social Media: Four Key Strategies, pause here and go check that one out first. If you have seen it, great! Let’s move on to Part 2.

Once upon a time. . . just kidding! Let’s actually dive in.

When it comes to building your brand and engaging with the geospatial community, choosing the right social media platform is key. LinkedIn, Instagram, and X each offer distinct features and functionalities that cater to different needs and styles.

Whether you're looking to share original content, build a following, land a job, or market a product, understanding these platforms can help you craft a strategy that aligns with your goals.

Let’s dive into the unique characteristics of each platform and how you can leverage them effectively.

LinkedIn: Professional Networking and Branding

Platform Summary: LinkedIn is often seen as the go-to tool for professional networking and personal branding. It's more than just a job search engine; it's a platform for showcasing your expertise and developing your professional identity. For those in the geospatial field, LinkedIn allows you to highlight your skills, share your accomplishments, and connect with other professionals and organizations.

Networking: LinkedIn is ideal for building and maintaining professional relationships. By creating a detailed profile, you can present your educational background, work experience, and achievements in a way that attracts recruiters and industry peers. The platform also offers opportunities to join specialized groups, such as GIS-specific groups, facilitating connections with others in your field. Here’s some groups I’d recommend joining:

  1. Esri Network
  2. Esri Young Professionals Network
  3. Esri GIS

Instagram: Visual Storytelling and Engagement

Platform Summary: Visuals, visuals, VISUALS! Did you get that? Visuals! Instagram is a visually driven platform designed to inspire and captivate through photos and videos. For the geospatial community, it’s an excellent space to share striking maps, innovative GIS applications, and visually appealing geographic data. Whether through posts, stories, or reels, Instagram emphasizes creativity and visual storytelling.

Networking: On Instagram, networking happens through following and engaging with other profiles. By connecting with GIS influencers and organizations, you can broaden your reach and gain insights from industry leaders. The platform’s recommendation algorithms also help you discover content that aligns with your interests, enhancing your network within the GIS community.

Personal Tip: Instagram is the platform with the most functionalities and tools. Don’t forget to use what’s available to you. My thoughts? Utilize Instagram Stories! Stories are powerful tool for real-time engagement. They allow you to share updates, events, and behind-the-scenes glimpses that disappear after 24 hours, creating a sense of immediacy.

X: Real-Time Updates and Broad Engagement

Follow accounts for updates on features, functionalities and tips!Follow accounts for updates on features, functionalities and tips!

Platform Summary: X is designed for brief, impactful communication and is ideal for real-time updates (like trending topics) and engagement. For GIS professionals, it’s a place to share insights, participate in discussions, and connect with a broader audience through concise posts and hashtags.

Networking: X’s large and diverse user base makes it an excellent platform for outreach and interaction beyond traditional work relationships. Engaging in conversations, retweeting relevant content, and following GIS experts and organizations can help you stay updated on industry trends and expand your network. Here’s some accounts I’d recommend following:

  1. @EsriTraining (Announcements and sign-ups for the latest trainings)
  2. @ArcGISPro (Latest updates, features and tips)
  3. @EsriYPN (Obviously!)

Building Your Brand: Choose Wisely

When building your brand and choosing the right platform, consider what you hope to achieve:

  • LinkedIn is ideal for professional branding, networking, and job searching. Focus on creating a detailed profile, engaging with industry-specific content, and joining relevant groups (see some options mentioned above).
  • Instagram excels in visual storytelling and creative engagement. Use it to share compelling maps, project highlights, and behind-the-scenes content through posts, stories and reels.
  • X is great for real-time updates and broad interactions. Leverage lists, hashtags, and concise posts to share insights, participate in conversations, and connect with a wider audience.

Your choice of platform will impact the tone, style, and target audience of your content. By aligning your social media strategy with your goals and interests, you can effectively build your brand and make meaningful connections in the geospatial community!

Oh, and by the way, I’m still not quite done. Part 3 is coming soon!
