The Lisbon Drainage Master Plan is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming the Portuguese capital’s resilience to flooding, while simultaneously integrating innovative environmental solutions and advanced technology. Led by a dedicated team, with key experts such as BIM manager Tiago Andrade Gomes, the project tackles Lisbon’s long history of devastating floods. Occurring as recently as 2022, these floods have caused significant damage, both in terms of lives lost and economic impact—losses from the most recent flood amounted to nearly 50 million euros.

The St. Johns County, FL Public Works Department plays a crucial role in supporting infrastructure and services that residents rely on daily. A key part of this is the Fleet Management Division, which manages and repairs over 1,200 pieces of equipment, including trucks, ATVs, bookmobiles, and fire engines. With such a large and diverse fleet, it is crucial to track and manage assets to ensure high-quality service, enhance safety, and lower operational costs. To accomplish this, St. Johns County has implemented advanced technology to improve fleet management operations. Using Trimble Cityworks as a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and ArcGIS for asset management helps simplify workflow and adhere to industry best practices.

While the American Public Works Association (APWA) can trace the history of their annual conference back to 1894, it has been known as the Public Works Expo (PWX) since 2016. This year’s event was in Chicago, IL, and as we have done for decades, Esri was there to support the organization, event, and community. This was my fourth PWX, and the best by far. Here is a short recap of my PWX 2025 experience.
