How critical is that you install the EXACT version of the extraneous software listed in Table 1 in the Oct 2012 installation guide? For instance, it says you need to install PostgreSQL version 9.1.5 and all I can find online is the installer for version 9.1.9. Same goes for the other software. The number after the second dot in a version number just indicates, essentially, bug-fix versions, right? Can version mismatch at that level cause problems?

Turns out the answer to my main questions is: not very. I got slightly different versions of Postgres, Apache Tomcat, and the Java JDK than stated in the guide and it all worked out. When I first ran into trouble, my initial thought was that it was because I had not installed the exact recommended versions, but my problems turned out to be fixable, so that wasn't it.
