We implemented the ArcGIS Server Geoportal Extension 9.3.1.sp1 for production, and have stood-up a Geoportal version 10 installation that we are still working on. It appears that v10 has more out-of-the-box support for raster and imagery.
In response to your questions:
How long did it take to implement? Weeks? Months?
It has been our experience that it takes two main staff, 1 full time, and 1 part time, for the initial Geoportal implementation taking 2 months. One person, the GIS (metadata) ??Geoportal Content Administrator?, and a second person part time, the I. T. ??Geoportal Operations Manager.? The System Administrator from the I.T. Team (Geoportal Operations Manager) installed the underlying software; provides web, configuration, and programming support; has full administrative rights and can create user accounts and assign privileges. The GIS Specialist (Geoportal Content Administrator) adds an understanding of the GIS and how the Geoportal fits into the current metadata workflow, metadata standards, validation, and how the Geoportal can integrate with other ArcGIS software, and with the Microsoft SharePoint software. Other Staff ultimately involved, but to a lesser extent were the ??ArcGIS Server Administrator? (ArcGIS Server platform oversite responsibility), and the ??State Data Administrator? (for oversite of metadata responsiblility).
Firewall issues?
To date we are still operating internally, but the Geoportal is designed to sit outside on the Public facing side of the firewall.
ESRI documents recommend training. For users that had the training was it helpful?
Geoportal training come highly recommeded if it is offered like "ArcGIS Server Geoportal Estension 9.3.1"! It's better to take it sooner than later!
Metadata? Are there any unique solutions in entering metadata that would encourage researchers to spend the time to do it right? Maybe drop down menus?
There is an online metadata form that appears to be highly customizable. We are getting ready to see what we can do with that. The downside is, it has been my experience that there is no tie to the data so metadata elements like spatial reference and number of features, currently must be populated manually.
Except for a few issues that always come up (each installation is unique) what are your overall impressions.
We like the way it can store large volumes of metadata, provides a source for internal data sharing, or can provide public access to information about datasets. It provides a site for users to ??find and access? GIS resources with the ability to connect to map services, and websites for more information upfront through the metadata.
Our experience has been:
It forces more standardization in regard to defining the metadata workflow, and development of, and adherence to naming conventions.
