Just wondering if anyone is aware of good user cases or examples of GIS usage specifically in substations.

We have a client that is anticipating a lot of work upgrading their stations over the next few years and we want to use the opportunity to move their corporate GIS deeper into their work processes.

We already have a sophisticated GIS, data repository, ArcFM model, geometric network, suite of custom tools, etc. The stations are currently all captured, albeit a bit more schematic than outside the stations.

We physically drew in all of our substations.  We took the most current drawings from AutoCAD. georeferenced them in ArcGIS and physically drew in almost every single component through which electricity flows.  Each feature has an Asset number that is linked directly to our Maximo database.  Lot of work but in the end it works very very well. A guy can be out in the field and say, this item needs to be replaced. Right there he can arrange for a work order to be set up.
