Mapping for Bureaucrats: Blowing the Minds of Elected & Government Leadership

Government is bulky and moves slow. Usually, to gain access to new information an elected official or department general manager needs to put in a request into some sort of group or committee, then someone will be tasked with gathering the information, crafting a long report on white paper and black ink, font size 12 Times New Roman, and delivering this as a static PDF or print out weeks or months later.

This way of doing things hurts communities and residents within a municipality, and further adds to the frustration usually associated with government's slow pace.

Thoughtful analysis through maps leveraging open data portals, user-centered design and creative problem solving changes the dynamics described above.

In this presentation we'll share a handful of stories about how the Los Angeles Office of Finance is using Esri technology to shift the way government leadership accesses and consumes information to be more in line with what's possible and not with what they're used to.
