Updating an original feature class with an edited version?

I am trying to keep an original polygon feature class, make a copy "Edits", make those edits as necessary, then find a way to update the original... Almost a versioning situation, but on a single user, ArcInfo 10 license. Has anyone seen a model or script that accomplishes this task?  Thanks for any input.

Have you tried making a Distributed Geodatabase?  It seems like this may be the way to go.
