unable to preserve elevation data: CAD to Arcmap

Good afternoon--

I'm attempting to import some contours from CAD into Arcmap 10 to create a TIN/DEM, but am unable to get the .dwg import to preserve the elevation data in the CAD file.  Perhaps there's something more I need to do in CAD; each layer is separate vertically and to sscale, so I don't think that there is.  I add layer as dwg and the elevation field is filled with 0s, although the polylines are there.

Any thoughts?  And thank you in advance.

It may be worth trying a calculate Z geometry on one of the fields to see if the elevation data are there.
