Sudden crippling slow down in ArcMap...

I am attempting to edit topology of polylines and polygons in ArcMap. Seemingly unprovoked, any action I take that involves redrawing the layers takes upwards of five minutes. Topology can no longer be validated at it "runs out of memory". There's a whole lot of "Not Responding".

Please, please, please any idea of what happened?? I have attempted to rebuild the mxd, but the problem persists. I have installed the service packs, and done several other "tricks" suggested in the forums.. I can no longer work.

I can't even close ArcMap and start over - not even End Process closes it... PLEASE HELP!!!

EDIT: The problem quickly got worse - even previewing the feature class caused ArcCatalog to seize up required reboot to close. Seems I can no longer access the file at all. I have tried "Repairing Geometry and "Feature Class To Feature Class" in a new geodatabase.

HELP!

If you are working with the data over the network, you will get much less performance than if you work with the data on you local drive.
