ArcSDE service doesn't start after upgrade ArcSDE 9.3.1 to ArcSDE 10

Connected to instance . . .
ERROR in checking system st_geometry type (1).
Error checking the existence of system tables. Run
the Upgrade Geodatabase tool to install/upgrade system tables (-450).
Refer ArcSDE installation guide for instructions.

ArcSDE 10 and ArcGIS Desktop 10 must be exactly in the same version (service pack).

Hi Bertrand:

Can you provide some additional information on your configuration and the steps you have taken to this point?  The (-450) error is stating that the ArcSDE binaries are not compatible with the geodatabase release.

The error you are displaying states that the database has not been upgraded and thus the system tables it is looking for (ie. GDB_ITEMS, etc.) are not found.

Verify that this geodatabase has in fact been upgraded from 9.3.1 to 10.0 as you stated.  Connect to the geodatabase from ArcCatalog using a direct-connection and right-click the connection.  Go to "Properties and check the "Upgrade Geodatabase" button for information on the status of the ArcGIS client and ArcSDE geodatabase compatibility.

Also, verify that the ArcSDE release that you have installed is consistent with the database version that you have upgraded to.  This should be consistent with the ArcGIS client that was used to perform the upgrade.

Hi Jon,

Thanks you for your response.

The steps are listed below:

-I deleted the ArcSDE service (esri_sde) 9.3.1
-I uninstalled 9.3.1 ArcSDE binaries
-From ArcCatalog 10 SP3, using a direct-connection --> Upgrade status: 'This 9.3 database can be upgraded to the ArcGIS release you are currently using to support...' --> Upgrade Geodatabase
-The Upgrade status indicated that 'This 10.0 database matches the ArcGIS release you are currently using...'
-I installed ArcSDE 10 SP4
-I created a new service with the post installation wizard (custom)
-The ArcSDE service doesn't start --> sde_<service>.log file indicated:

ST_Geometry Schema Owner: (SDE) Type Release: 1007
Instance initialized for ((sde)) . . .
Connected to instance . . .
ERROR in checking system st_geometry type (1).
Error checking the existence of system tables. Run
the Upgrade Geodatabase tool to install/upgrade system tables (-450).
Refer ArcSDE installation guide for instructions.

-I checked all Criteria listed in this technical article: FAQ:  Why does ArcSDE service for Oracle fail to start?: http://support.esri.com/en/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/25574
-I installed the SP4 for ArcGIS Desktop 10
-Upgrade Geodatabase again
-The ArcSDE service was started successfully

Have a good day,
Bertrand

You can't use an SP3 Desktop to upgrade the ArcSDE then install ArcSDE 10 SP4 without
using a SP4 Desktop to upgrade again.  If you want a 10-SP4 ArcSDE, you should upgrade
the desktop to SP4 first.
