I've created a layer package and would like to be able to add its contense to a map in ArcMap. I have tried opening it using the Add Data button but the layer file does not appear where I have saved it. However I am able to open the layer through my  computer's file directory but that creates a new map which would basically force me to start over.

Basically what I want to know is how do I open this layer package to be used in an existing map?

Hi Sheena, what process did you use to create the layer package?

Hi Sephe,

I created it by seecting all the required layers in the table of contents and basically followed the steps in this article http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//00s500000013000000

and selected Save package to file.

Found out how to get the layer package to open by selecting it from Folder Connections in the the Catalog window.

You should still be able to use the add data button, you just needed to add the folder connection first.

The folder connection was there but for some reason the .lpk  file did appear when I used to add data button.
