Hello. I have an .h5 file that I am attempting to open. Every time I attempt to add it, it crashes ArcMap. Can I use this file type? If so, is there a conversion I need to do? Thank you!

Hi Tiffany,

Yes this file format is supported.  See here:

http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//009t0000000q000000

Is this occurring for all .h5 files, or just this one in particular?

What version, including service packs, of ArcGIS Desktop are you using?

Hi Tiffany,

Looks like the data you have is HDF5, which usually includes a list of subdatasets. Please see the link below about Raster data with subdatasets:

http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//009t00000014000000

For ArcGIS 10 or above, you should be able to add the data into ArcMap directly using the Add Data button, there is also an Extract Subdataset tool you can try if you want to add any specific subdataset within the file, please see a detailed explanation below:

Adding a subdataset to ArcMap:
http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//009t0000006z000000

Extract Subdataset (ArcToolbox > Data Management Tools > Raster > Raster Processing > Extract Subdataset):
http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//00170000009s000000

Please try them and see if you can add the data either way.

Regards,
Kailai
