Received a DWG File 2011 and same DWG File saved in 2007 Version.
Each time I have tried adding the DWG file into map document it hangs ArcMap and has to be killed via End Task.

It is this one particular file though as other DWG's load fine.

How big is the file and does it contain a lot of text?  I know when I used to bring CAD files into ArcMap, the amount of text in the CAD file dramatically affected the load time (which may seem like ArcMap is hung).  By removing the text, I was able to greatly decrease the time ArcMap took to process the CAD file.  A few pieces of text should not cause any problems but having hundreds of text elements in the CAD did.  It was a very exponential curve.

Also I notice that sometimes CAD files will have huge extents since there may be a couple elements far away (often near the origin) from the main body of the drawing.  ArcMap seems to slow down when the spatial extents are that big.

The DWG in question is only 693 kb. For reference I have other much larger DWG files that load fine. I have since learned it is not just my computer it will not load on others as well, pretty sure it is the DWG file itself. The surveyor has resent it several times in different versions. So at a loss right now.
The DWG loads fine in AutoCAD and has the appropriate local coordinate system.
Thanks.

I have recently found the same problem.  Files are not large, very little text.  Doesn't happen with every dwg, just a few.  No apparent consistency.  Would like to hear what you find out.

Are there any elevations or Z factors in your drawings? We used to have problems w/our CAD dwgs when Z factors were inadvertently created.

just a thought....
