I am very new to GIS. When I import the excel document and hit “Display XY Data” the X and Y field do not have any options in the drop down menu. Do you know why this is the case? I have been trying to figure this out for hours now and believe it is a simple error on my part. Any assistance you provide would be greatly appreciated.

Another way of making sure you have number fields is to change it in Excel. Make sure the field is actually all numeric values (no quotes like Darren said) and change the field type drop down to Number

Like you said, the fields were all General and I tried to change the lat and long to number but still not working.

Laxmi,

Could you share one XLS sheet with me. I will clean it up for you and you could follow the same for others.

Also let me know what to do with the cells of Lat/Lon that don't have any numeric values (e.g. Parking Lot).

Oh really !! I do not know the value. Can I replace it with 0. Do I need to remove quotes from lat/long only or from all the other fields too?

You can keep the quotes in other fields only if you want to see the quotes  in the attribute table of ArcMap for those fields. If you replace the text values with 0, the location will still be wrong.

I suggest you isolate all the rows that have Text values in Lat. or Lon. fields. Just copy-paste those rows from current sheet to a new sheet. Then, delete these rows from the current sheet.

Thank you so much Jayanta !!!

I am very new to GIS have no idea about anything. I am taking an online

course from Coursera and this data was given to us as a part of the

assignment, hence replacing any value for the "parking lot" and all would

do no harm I guess.

I have attached the XLS sheet here. I really really appreciate your help.

The issue was that the values of Address field had comma in it. Since the format was in CSV, the values were split on both sides of comma, thus pushing all the other values of the row to the right.

Asrujit has cleaned the CSV for you. I am also attaching the CSV that I created. It just has all the values intact. I added the split values into the Address column.
