Deleting a feature class from a feature dataset??

Not sure if this is the proper sub-forum, but I am working in a geodatabase!

The problem is that I have created several feature classes within a feature dataset that are not needed / wanted in the feature dataset anymore, and I would like to clean house. However, when I try to delete, I am given the message 'Failed to delete selected object(s)'!

What gives?

Is there any way to get rid of these unwanted feature classes, or do I have to create another feature dataset and import everything besides the unwanted classes into it (which I have already painstakingly done once!)

Also curious if there is a way to rename these feature classes, which I am similarly not allowed to do.

Thanks!

If a feature class is participating in a topology layer you cannot rename or delete. Have to remove from topology first.

Is someone else using the data and causing a lock? There might be a better way but I always run a compact and the error message will give the computer that is holding the lock.

Not a topology issue - it's one of those mystery issues. After restarting the comp, I was able to delete/rename whatever I wanted.
