batch editing attribute table shapefile feature class

I have an attribute column for road type.  Paved, gravel and dirt.  There are several thousand in the table.  If I need to change a lot of them to a different type, is there an easy way to do this without doing it manually?  TIA.

For example, if all the roads labeled "B" are listed as gravel, but should be changed to paved, how can I change these in batch?

If you only have a couple attributes it would be very quick to select by attributes, start an editing session, and use field calculator to give selected attribute new name.
