Hello,

I am having issues with upgrading to ArcSDE 10 SP5.
My gdb is on ArcSDE 9.2 SP6 on Oracle 10.2.0.3 x32 .I have migrated the data to Oracle 11.2.0.3 x64 (Server 2008 R2 x64), and trying to make a direct connection through ArcCatalog 10, in order to perform the upgrade to ArcSDE 10 SP5.

The problem that I encounter is that the direct connection will not work. It gives all sort of error messages (the most common one is a general DBMS error "underlying DBMS error [Unkonown error. No extended error.]".
We have installed the 32bit Oracle Client (full, not Instant), but avail.
I have followed the instructions on ESRI site, on how to connect without SDE service, eg: sde:oracle11g:<Net service name 32bit>
What is interesting is this: When i try to connect to the new database, from the old server, with ArcCatalog 9.2, it connects and shows all the data, but cannot upgrade, since it has ArcSDE 9.2 installed, and I cannot install a new version since that server still runs as a production server.

Please advise...
tnx in advance.
Regards,
Milos.

It seems that we think alike, Vince 🙂
I didn't give up, instead I decided to follow this manual:

http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Migrating_to_ArcSDE_64_bit_on_Windows_...

I deleted the geodatabase, created a new one, empty, and installed ArcSDE from the scratch...created the repository, user and voila....the authorization passed without a glitch. So it wasn't the license code...
Then, I created the service, started also without problems.
My next step was to create a direct connect from the new test server(ArcCatalog 10) to the old test server (the one I upgraded the ArcSDE from 9.2 to 10 on),and started copying the FDS using ArcCatalog copy - paste mechanism.

Everything went well, with minor stops because of the relationship classes and extensions, privileges, roles creation etc...but now I get the error in the attach, and do not know what it is:

Any ideas?
Tnx,

M.

Good to hear you finally managed to make headway and get it running! 🙂

But hey, didn't I point out that Help link before to you?!! ... ;););)

Can you provide some more context to this. Is "UTARC" a Feature Class or Stand-alone Table in the original 9.2 geodatabase?

And is there a field called "CO_C_JOINT_TYPE" in the attribute table?

Is this UTARC table potentially from another business system, registered with the geodatabase but not initially created by ArcGIS?

I think you mentioned this whole database involved an Utility Extension? Have you thought of installing that on the new server and client PCs, so that ArcGIS knows about specific custom objects added to the geodatabase base model?

I have contacted the local ESRI dealer, and they will come to assistance today, since they are but busy...
Marco,  yes you did, but I had overlooked the possibility, and maybe had to much confidence in Oracle's expdp. 🙂

UTARC is a schema name, and CO_C_JOINT_TYPE is the table owned by utarc.
I solved the issue, the problem was that the table was not registered with the gdb (had no objectid field)...
It seems that now everything works... I have copied everything, and all the data is now on Oracle 11g under SDE 10 SP5.

Thanks to you guys, your suggestions saved me.

P.S. If I run into more troubles, I'll come back 🙂

Best regards,
Milos

Seems to me it's just going to be coffee and tea with ESRI... 😉 Anyway, may not be a bad thing to have just one last "check-up" on the finished work by someone with a fresh look on it and able to assist you directly versus "remote"...

You're welcome, and let us know the final outcome!

Well,

it seems my troubles have ended, succesfully.
The problem was with the SDE.GDB_ITEMS.
It seems that Oracle datapump has issues with ST_GEOMETRY, and it will not copy the rows, it only creates the table structure.
So, here is what I did:

Did the expdp of the schemas needed, and a standalone export with exp tool of the gdb_items table.
used impdp to import the schemas.
Truncated the gdb_items table in the gdb, and used imp to import the gdb_items table alone.
Then run a script that refreshes the grants, recreates users, roles, and everything worked like a charm.

Best regards,
Milos.
