ArcSDE 10.1 connection file

Hi

I have a simple question about SDE 10.1 (oracle based) connection file

For Direct SDE connection, I understand that we need to install oracle client in order to make it work

How about SDE connection via �??Create ArcSDE Connection File�?� thru toolbox. In this case, do we need to install oracle client?

All Direct Connect connections require that the database client software be available.
Query Layer connections also require a database client install.

Application Server connections do not require a database client (they use the ArcSDE
connection protocol).

For the direct connection, you can install the Oracle Instant Client that is available with the ArcGIS Desktop software.  This is a light-weight Oracle Client install.
