Hello all,

I am looking for the online help and pdfs for Administering ArcSDE database servers and the help section called 'Administering a database server'. For 9.3 these are here: http://resources.esri.com/help/9.3/geodatabase/pdf/dbserver.pdf

and

http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/9.3/index.cfm?TopicName=Administering_a_database_server

But where are they for 10? Or can I just use the same ones? I expect it has changed a little since 9.3, right?

All I see for 10 is http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Essential_readings_about_the_geodataba...

and

http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//000500000002000000.htm

Which seems to just be "Administering Geodatabases licensed through ArcGIS Server Enterprise". Where's the SQL Server Express workgroup level 10 help?

Thank you,

Andrea,

Try this topic and the topics below it:

Russell,

Ok thanks.

Why is it hidden in the ArcGIS Desktop help!!? I'm using Server!

And as a general note, I find the Resource center for 10 a LOT harder to use than 9.3. For everything, scripts, help menu, code, etc. PDFs of administering SDE as a case in point. They are there for 9.3 but not for 10 - I have to open each of those help menu items to print off the whole thing. But the 9.3 version there is a pdf. ugh.

It is in the Desktop help because it also applies to the ArcSDE geodatabases for SQL Server Express licensed through Desktop.  However, the same information is also in the Server help:

.NET
http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisserver/10.0/help/arcgis_server_dotnet_help/index.html#/What_are_data...

Java
http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisserver/10.0/help/arcgis_server_java_help/index.html#/What_are_databa...

On the ArcSDE PDFs....those were done at 9.3 because the ArcSDE topics were all lumped together in the help at 9.3 and people had a hard time weeding out information specific to one database - the PDFs broke them out by database to help remedy that.  At 10, each database has its own section in the help.

Ah, well. I would put money on that "people" are having "a hard time weeding out information specific to one database" now as well. And printing from a nice pdf that's all put together is much more enjoyable. I would also put money on that people are having a hard time finding the help for workgroup level SDE administration because it is buried under that many menu items. How about moving it up a couple folders to the same level as the Enterprise title and calling it "administering SDE for workgroup level or database servers". Each database might have it's own section but I bet you can't find it. An interesting test for a bunch of beta testers perhaps. I certainly searched for it for about an hour. Guess I should have just done a search using the search box, duh. But still.

This posting is sounding a little strong. Read this with a bit of humor, sarcasm, and punchiness for the end of the day mixed in....but my points remain.
