I have six ASTER GDEM tiles, projected to Mercator (World), saved as grid format, 16 bit signed integer files.  All are clean (no sinks, holes, no negative values, etc).

I want to mosaic them to a single DEM, but when I try to add them to a mosaic dataset, the resulting raster has values that include a range from -32768 to 32767.

Any ideas?  I've tried changing environmental settings, and a number of other things, but can't seem to figure out why it is returning a dem with junk cell values.

Thanks for any tips.

Are there actual cells with those values?  Try computing statistics on them.

Have you checked your pixel type? Sounds like your mosaic raster is attempting to become 32-bit unsigned. Given your 16-bit inputs, make your output 16-bit too.

Steve,

You have to calculate statistics on the mosaic dataset.

I just solved this issue by calculating the histograms in the symbology menu of layer properties.
