It does, you just need to change the URL (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwEfWw6tPiprRjN1Y0RhUC1RU1U/edit?usp=sharing) by this schema: https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=<image_id>
So in this case your URL would be:
https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=0BwEfWw6tPiprRjN1Y0RhUC1RU1U
The URLs you have point to Google's preview tool, which displays the image embedded within their tool. To get the direct URL for the image, one quick way is to right-click on the image and "Copy image URL" (or your browser's equivalent). You can than paste and use that URL in a Story Map.
I'm having a similar problem. I have the images I want to add to Story Map in a separate folder in Google Drive, but I am not seeing a "copy image URL" option; instead, I have a "get shareable link" option which Story Map doesn't seem to like. See attached screen capture.
Any ideas?
I'm chiming in 3 years later as no resolution was documented...This article provides a possible solution

Thanks for this. The last few steps of the ESRI instructions were confusing. An example helped!!!
