Story Map error - "not authorized"

When attempting to access a Story Map created from the Classic templates using a URL (alleged) derived after making it public, I receive an error message stating the following:

An error has occurred

You are not authorized to access this story

Before receiving this error message, i am prompted to log in with my account, which i do.  The student that created the Story Map did so using the free public account for Online [again, allegedly].  This is an error message that appears every so often from different Story Maps, so figuring out why this message is generating is my goal here.  I previously thought that it was simply because the Story Map was not configured to be public, but students insist that it is indeed public.  So, what is creating this error.

Searching ArcGIS Online for that itemID returns no results.

That means the item is either not publicly shared or has been deleted.

I am having the same problem (I think; I'm not sure my map was created with the classic template). I can no longer access any of my story maps, but specifically the one at 
https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/15ca28a1a6de4cc5a2c95185f94b3dd8
which I am on the verge of publishing publicly (not only to USGS users).
None of my story maps are available to me any longer and they were all there just yesterday.
Coincidentally I had saved my credentials in my Safari browser, and today I was forced to log on again -- and nothing is there -- so I'm hoping this is an affiliation/access issue and the product has not been erased -- I hope.

@AnnieSimpson -- I would recommend contacting Esri Support so they can help you figure out what is going on. Perhaps you have multiple accounts or some content was modified or moved by an administrator in your organization.
