so I am new at creating display maps in Arcmap. I have a file with all the layers I need in it.  I need to print 2 different scenarios within that file.  Is there a way to create 2 different maps in that file, as opposed to making a copy of the mxd file? Thanks for any help you can give.

True, I read Mike's question as only needing to modify the view and not necessarily change other elements based on the new map.

getting confused here.....so I CAN lock a layout, but only 1 per frame?  How do I do that?

An example:

By setting a spatial bookmark, you can always return to this spatial extent after working on an mxd.  For example, for this figure I added a bookmark called "layoutview_51,000" so I could remember what to reset the figure to after making edits.

You can lock one and only one layout

If you want 2 layouts then either

  • move stuff off the layout, switch data frames, move stuff on layout, print
  • save mxd after creating layout, load copy of mxd (eg myproject_layout01.mxd myproject_layout02.mxd ad nauseum) make new layout, save
  • program
  • ArcGIS Pro
  • ArcView 3.x for that old school look
  • 3rd party software (photoshop etc)
