Convert mark-up graphics to features (pmfinx)

I have some ArcReader mark-ups that I have exported and would like to convert to features. Although the graphics are visible and selected, I get an error that there are no features which can be converted. I found an archived post on this subject, but the method described is not working. (http://forums.esri.com/Thread.asp?c=113&f=1142&t=278932) Any suggestions?

I found that if I added a line, as per the article, and then grouped all the graphics (the line and the markups) under the drawing menu, I was then able to Convert Graphics to Features, and the whole lot got converted to shp fine - and then go in and delete the line in the shp.
