ArcReader changed?

I am a little bit confused because I am pretty sure that I have used ArcReader in the past to view shapefiles (esp. their attributes) without having a GIS installed.
Obviously the ArcReader I have installed on my PC can only use pmf-files.
Am I dreaming or has the software been changed?
Is there a free-shapefile-viewer (no wms) available on the internet?

Hi Joe,

I think you have used ArcGis Explorer.

Joe,

Perhaps you were thinking of ArcExplorer (different than ArcGIS Explorer). You can still download it but it is no longer supported and was superceeded by ArcGIS Explorer. Both read shapefiles I believe. I know the names are pretty similar so it can be confusing...

Good luck,
