Using heavy raster data in ArcPad

Hello

I have some aerial imagery that I need to use with ArcPad in the field. At full resolution (jpeg), they weigh ~2Go, which is obviously too big for most handheld devices.

With 9.3 I used to "get Data for ArcPad", which would convert my image to MrSid and thus output a much more reasonnable filesize. But apparently, this process has disappeared with 10.1...

My question is thus: what would be the optimal strategy to be able to work with my imagery in ArcPad on a handheld device?

I currently have ArcGIS for Desktop 10.1 (evaluation version, until my IT comes back from holiday to install the license server), ArcPad 10 (evaluation version, and thus no ArcPad Studio for now). We will eventually have ArcGIS for Server 10.1 as well, but also needs for the IT to come back...

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Stéphane

Use ArcGIS to create smaller tiles of your imagery and also create a aerial tile grid to load on the device.  I try to make sure the individual tiles as jpg are in the 150 K size range and based on the memory capabilities of your device and arcpad, I only have about 4 loaded at a time.  Rather than loading a bunch of the tiles and then turning them off and on, I find I have to unload and reload the specific tiles I need otherwise I get the LowMem warning of death.

To create the tiles, use the screen capture in ArcMap/GIS File>Export Map, and play around with how far you need to zoom in and what the different resolutions give you on the device.  Once I figure this all out, I create a layer with a polygon (no fill) that outlines my screen), then create as many of these as I need to cover my area.  Then I number each of the polygons and have the jpg aerial tile have the same number.

Tedious, but it works.
