Check out editable and read only layers to single axf?

I am creating a workflow where geological data will be captured in arcpad.

The geologists need a variety of data in field. Some of this data needs to be read only e.g. back ground mapping, geological interpretation and some needs to be editable e.g. structural or out crops (etc depending on what is being worked on on a particular day).

Is it possible to check out data to a single axf file some of which is read only and some of which is editable?

---

At the moment i can either check out all data then choose whether it is editable or not in ArcPad

or

Check out editable data as one axf and export read only data as a separate background layers axf

neither of these options is ideal in my mind.

Gavin,

If you have layers that are only ever going to be read only maybe you should export those to Shapefile for better performance. AXF may be the all singing and dancing solution to most storage solutions but I have found them to be a bit flaky sometimes, especially when one has more than 4 layers in an AXF (well that's my experience anyway).  Check this page out about ArcPad and Shapefiles.

thanks for your reply.

I knew i should have said "separate background axf layers or shape files." 🙂 I am aware of the adantages of shape file for read only data and may very well end up going down this route.

what i really want to know is:

Is it possible to CHECK OUT data to a single axf file some of which is read only and some of which is editable?

Gavin,

In ArcPad 10 when in ArcMap I can use the Get Data for ArcPad wizard to check out data from different geodatabases into a single axf database and one layer can be editable the other read only. The read only never appears in the editable layers menu on ArcPad. You would set one layer as Action > Export as background data (to AXF layer) > Make read only and for the editable layer you code do Action > check out for disconnected editing > check out schema only.

So yes you can have editable and read only in a single axf file.

whenever i do this the wizard creates 2 axf files one for the data i have simply checked out of editing and another for background layers.

checking out schema only (blank data set) is not an option as the geos are modifying existing data as well as collecting new.

I can "check out" all as background data some editable and some read only to a single axf however you cannot check in background data. So although you can make modifications in the field you cannot check them in and reconcile with a version.. which is the whole point of the exercise!

I think I am going to go down the route of checking out read only data in shape files and data to be modified as axf, although it would have been convienient to use a single axf. Thank you for helping inform my decision.

Gavin,

I must apologies I had made a mistake. I can replicate your issue such that you get 2 AXF files not one when one layer is checked out and the other is a read only layer. So I can't back track fast enough! 😮 Yeah looks like you cannot achieve what you were looking for just 1 AXF file. But in my experience the more you jam into it the less stable it becomes and the device crashes more often. I do what you are planning to, I have a layer checked out that I'm populating and everything else is read only shapefiles.
