ArcPad Emulator

I would like to use ArcPad studio to customize a project, but I am unable to use the device emulator.  I have followed the instructions
here:

But I do not have the windows mobile SDK.  So I tried to download it, and it wont install because it says "I do not have visual studio". I installed visual studio professional 10, the trial version, and it does not recognize it.

Is there an alternative way to get this emulator?

How am I supposed to use this product if I can't debug my code?
