Spatial Join issue

So I am trying to do a spatial join with a point layer to a polygon layer. The Score field in the point layer has values between 1-3 and when joining I get 0 in the newly created Spatial join layer. The Merge rule of Score field is set to Sum. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Please try "intersect" vs "contains", and see if that helps?  To me, a point feature can't contain.
