Strange characters in edit widget attributes

Hi,

I am using the sample flex viewer out-of-the-box edit widget and SQL Server Express with SDE.  I am on ArcGIS 10.  When I create a polygon feature on my map, the attributes box pops up and the default text in my "description" attribute are some Chinese/Japanese characters: "???????"  Please see screenshot below.  I am using subtypes with no default values.  Does someone know why I am seeing this behavior?  Thanks.

I put the characters into Google Translate and got: �? expansion �?
Does this help at all?  Prob not...

In case anybody cares or comes across this problem, I contacted ESRI support and we found that my data somehow became corrupted.  I created a new dataset and the problem went away.  If anybody knows what happened please let me know.  Thanks.
